Check for Errors on USPS Exam 474

Also called: Address comparison, Coding and memory (older name)

Check for Errors is the speed-and-accuracy section of USPS Exam 474. You compare two entries — typically names and addresses — and decide whether they match or where they differ. It is an attention task under time pressure, not a memory puzzle.

What to compare, in order

Use the same order every time: name, street number, street name, unit, city, state, ZIP. Common traps are a swapped digit, a changed abbreviation (St vs Street), a misspelled name, or a different apartment letter. Fatigue lowers this score quickly, so practice in short timed bursts.

How to practice

Work pairs of addresses side by side, then check the explanation for the exact difference. This site shows Entry 1 and Entry 2 on the same screen in both the practice set and the mock exams so the comparison is line by line.

Frequently asked questions

Is “St” the same as “Street” on this test?

Treat them as different unless the two entries use the same form of the word. Small abbreviation and spacing changes are the usual traps.

How should I read ZIP codes?

Compare them in pairs of digits rather than as one number. Transposed digits are easy to miss when you read 75204 as a whole.
