What is USPS Exam 474?

Also called: Virtual Entry Assessment 474, VEA 474, Postal Exam 474

USPS Exam 474 is the Virtual Entry Assessment (VEA) 474, an online screening test the United States Postal Service uses for city carrier and similar delivery jobs. Applicants take it remotely on their own device after they apply. It has three sections: Work Scenarios, Tell Us Your Story, and Check for Errors.

Independent explanation for applicants. Not official USPS policy. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the United States Postal Service.

Who takes Exam 474

Exam 474 is typically required for City Carrier Assistant (CCA) and Rural Carrier Associate (RCA) postings, and for other delivery roles that involve customer contact. Mail handler jobs usually use Exam 475. Clerk jobs usually use Exam 476. Always read the posting on usps.com/careers — the invitation names the exact assessment.

The three sections

Work Scenarios presents workplace situations and asks how you would respond. Tell Us Your Story covers work history, habits, and preferences and looks for consistent answers. Check for Errors asks you to compare addresses, names, and numbers under time pressure. Practice all three; a weak section can pull the overall result down.

Scoring, in brief

USPS does not publish a public passing cutoff. Results are typically Eligible or Ineligible. Eligible candidates are ranked on a hiring register; a higher score generally means being contacted sooner when a vacancy opens. Eligible is not a job offer. Background checks, fingerprints, and a conditional offer still follow.

How to prepare

Study each section, then take timed practice and full mock exams. USPS Assessment Exam is independent prep: a study guide, practice questions for all three sections, and five mock exams with result analysis. Plans are one-time: free preview, $15 study guide, $25 guide plus practice, $42 Complete Prep. Not affiliated with USPS.
