Work Scenarios on USPS Exam 474

Also called: Situational judgment, Workplace scenarios

Work Scenarios is the judgment section of USPS Exam 474. Each item describes a workplace situation (a coworker, a customer, a safety issue, a missed scan) and asks what you would do. It measures reliability, following procedure, safety, and customer service — not job trivia.

Independent explanation for applicants. Not official USPS policy. Not affiliated with or endorsed by the United States Postal Service.

What a good answer looks like

Strong answers protect people, the mail, and the customer, follow USPS-style procedure, and involve a supervisor when the issue is safety, policy, or something you cannot fix yourself. Weak answers ignore the problem, hide a mistake, skip a required step, or go around a supervisor without a reason.

How to practice

Work through many situations and read why each option is strong or weak. Then take a timed mock so the format is familiar on test day. This site includes a Work Scenarios practice set with explanations and five full mock exams on Complete Prep.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one correct answer on Work Scenarios?

USPS scores the most effective and least effective actions. Independent practice marks a best (and often a worst) answer so you can learn the pattern: safety, honesty, and procedure first.

Should I pick extreme answers?

Usually no. Extreme options — doing nothing, or escalating every small issue past a supervisor — tend to score poorly. Choose the action a careful, rule-following employee would take.
